Why I Wrote Frogs and Ghosts

Without going into too much detail, I’ve been dating online for many years and have had very little luck. Online dating sites can yield results, but more often than not you end up wasting your time, becoming frustrated at the lack of progress you’re making. I decided to write Frogs and Ghosts because I was feeling particularly annoyed with dating apps and platforms. I was hacked off having experienced setback after setback, and I thought I’d channel all my negative thoughts about online dating into an e-book. That’s how Frogs and Ghosts came about.

Frogs and Ghosts

Frogs and Ghosts is a collection of rants about online dating. In this e-book, I moan, grumble and complain about pretty much everything to do with dating on the internet.

There are 27 rants in total (I clearly have a lot to say about online dating!) and if you’ve ever tried dating online, some or even all of them should resonate with you.

Why Call It Frogs and Ghosts?

The title pretty much sums up most of the people I’ve encountered in the online dating world over the years. Lots of them are ghosts who stop messaging for no apparent reason at any moment. Most of them are frogs that aren’t really suitable for you. Some are both frogs and ghosts. A minority (a very small minority) are neither frogs nor ghosts and these are the hardest to find!

Though dating sites and apps can be irksome, it’s the people behind the profiles that have given me the most frustration. I thought it would be fitting to name the e-book after them.

How Personal Is Frogs and Ghosts?

All of the rants in Frogs and Ghosts are things I’ve felt at one time or another since I started dating online. I keep everything general without going into specifics. I don’t refer to any dating sites or apps by name, nor do I refer to anyone I’ve met or seen on dating platforms by name. The e-book is personal in the sense that it’s my honest, raw feelings about online dating, but at the same time it’s kind of universal. This is because anyone who’s dated online could have written the rants.

Will There Be a Second Instalment?

Nope. I’ve ranted enough about online dating and I’m done with it. Even though online dating is still a drag, I’ve offloaded just about all of my negative thoughts to do with it and don’t really want to do the same again. I’ve put my thoughts out there and to be honest, I doubt I would have enough new points to make to fill another e-book, even if online dating continues to prove unsuccessful for me.

Why Rants and Not Something More Positive?

I could have written an e-book that’s more hopeful and optimistic in tone. One that’s all about the positive aspects of online dating and how I’m sure success is going to come. But, I was never going to write such an e-book. My feelings about online dating are mostly negative and if I was going to write about it, the writing would have to reflect the way I felt about it; anything else would be inauthentic.

Believe it or not, I really enjoy writing rants. It’s a way of flushing negativity out of my mind and allowing more positive things to flourish. Writing over two dozen rants about online dating has made me feel better about it. Some might go so far as to call it therapeutic.

If you’d like to read more rants of mine, check out my Rants About Special Days series. There are currently four e-books in this series: Not So Festive (Christmas), Not So Loving (Valentine’s Day), Not So Spooky (Halloween) and Not So Caring (birthdays). Each e-book contains rants about the special day in question, along with a final piece of writing that talks about some of the good things the day brings.
