Why I Wrote Not So Caring

In early 2022, I decided to write some rants about Christmas. They became my e-book Not So Festive. At the time, I wasn’t intending it to become part of a series; it was very much a standalone e-book.

But, of course, things changed. Fast forward to 2023 and I found I had lots to say about other special days. And so, I wrote Not So Spooky (all about Halloween) and Not So Loving (all about Valentine’s Day). I very much enjoyed writing these and putting my thoughts and opinions on special days out there.

The Rants About Special Days series initially focused on special days that take place on a particular day every year. After writing the first three instalments, I realised I had just as many negative things to say about birthdays as I did about Christmas, Halloween and Valentine’s Day. I therefore put fingertips to keyboard and started writing Not So Caring. Birthdays aren’t public holidays like the ‘big three’ I’ve already ranted about, but they still very much count as special days. Not So Caring therefore had a place in the series.

Not So Caring

This e-book is all about birthdays and the (mostly) negative way I see them. It’s not just about my own birthday and how I and others approach it; there are also some rants about how I have to deal with other people’s birthdays. Yes, I’m somewhat of a misery guts at times!

Like the other e-books in the Rants About Special Days series, nearly everything is a rant. The final piece of writing, however, is not. Instead, it’s more positive and it says that, despite how I feel about birthdays, they’re not all that bad and they could be a whole lot worse.

Ranting and Raving About Birthdays

Birthdays aren’t the worst thing in the world. Even I can see that. The same is true for other special days. What I wanted to do with Not So Caring was focus on all the negative aspects and throw them at the reader. Usually when it comes to special days and public holidays, they’re always portrayed in a positive way. Too positive if you ask me.

I wrote Not So Caring because I wanted to vent about birthdays, but also because I wanted to show that they’re not all they’re cracked up to be; a lot of the time, anyway. I wanted to show that while birthdays are portrayed as being wonderful things, that’s not necessarily always true.

Why Call It Not So Caring?

It’s simple really. Each instalment in the Rants About Special Days series follows a formula for its title: ‘Not So’ followed by some sort of adjective that somehow links to whatever I’m ranting about. The title Not So Caring came to me almost immediately I decided to write the e-book. The word ‘Caring’ jumped to me because ‘I don’t care about birthdays’ is something I’ve said to myself many times over the years. To say I’m not so caring about birthdays is very apt indeed!

Will There Be More E-Books in the Series?

There will be at some point. I’m too much of a cynic not to have a load of rants stored in my mind. So far I’ve ranted about Christmas, Halloween, Valentine’s Day and birthdays… There are some things I could say about New Year. Maybe even funerals? Or possibly weddings? Oh yes, I can say for certain that Not So Caring will not be the last instalment in the Rants About Special Days series.
