Why Write When No One’s Reading?

Is anyone there?

Unread books

Do you ever feel that what you’re writing is going to have hardly any readers or even none at all?

That your words will be read by none other than yourself?

That the meaningful piece of writing you’re producing is merely a waste of your time?

Every writer has been in this position at some point, no matter what type of writing they’re producing, what platform(s) they’re using or how they want their work to be disseminated to the masses.

Even as I write this blog post, I admit to myself that what I’m writing will more than likely be read by very few people. That is, in the short term.

The thing is, once you publish any sort of written content online, it’s there to stay. Yes, you can remove it at any time, but why would you?

Your writing might not meet anyone’s eyes right now. Heck, it could go days, weeks or months without registering a single reader. But at least you’ve put it out there.

Something you write and publish now might not have an immediate impact, but it could pick up readers years or even decades from now.

The next time you’re feeling as if you’re writing for no one, bear in mind that your work could well be read by many people in the future.

Some content finds an audience right away; some content takes its time to do this. The same is true for e-books, general website content and any other type of writing involving the internet.

As you publish more material and build up a reader base, there’s more of a chance that your earlier work will receive some attention.

Your early pieces of writing that don’t get many (or any) reads are your foundation. For this foundation of yours to mean something and be effective, you have to build on it. As you build (i.e. put more content out there), your earlier works will still be there, ready to be read by the new readers you attract.

If your writing is meant to generate responses, affect others and persuade people to buy into your brand, it will get there. If you’re patient and prepared to keep on working, what’s going unnoticed now will someday have its moment in the spotlight.

I sometimes wonder if my e-books and blog posts will reach large numbers of readers. I’m hopeful they will.

My numbers aren’t impressive at all, but in time they can only improve. The thing is, numbers and stats might be low now, but there’s only one way they can go and that’s up.
