<image:title>Blog - The Inspiration Behind Presents for Raymond - Better Be Good</image:title>
<image:caption>A mother with an unruly son wonders whether she should tell Santa he’s been a naughty boy. ‘Better Be Good’ was inspired by the two-sentence horror story of the same name. It’s in one of the images above, but I’ll repeat it here: Santa will give you a lump of coal if you’ve been naughty,’ the mother reminded her son. On Christmas Day, she awoke to the sound of him choking on a lump of coal that had been lodged in his throat. - #17, Terror in Brief A lot of my two-sentence horror stories come about through me interpreting something literally and injecting a horror element of some kind into it. When writing Terror in Brief, I wanted the stories to be varied and I thought it would be a good idea to include some themed to special days. I got to thinking about Christmas and what aspects of it could be adapted into a horror story. Santa Claus is of course a largely benevolent figure. I wanted to write a two-sentence story that casts Santa in a negative light. The idea of giving coal to naughty kids came to mind and I decided to ramp this up: Santa isn’t just handing over a piece of coal, he’s instead physically forcing it down a kid’s throat. Writing the expanded version of ‘Better Be Good’ was enjoyable, dare I say. I looked at the original, two-sentence version and developed the key points further, looking at how and why the kid misbehaves and how this affects his mother. Usually, it’s up to Santa to decide who’s been good and who’s been bad; he has his famous list, remember! For the expanded ‘Better Be Good’, I thought it would be a good idea to involve the mother in her son’s punishment somehow. And so, fed up with her son’s unruly behaviour, she deliberately lets Santa know that her son deserves a lump of coal. A second twist is that the mother doesn’t know quite how Santa will give her son the lump of coal. Not only does the son suffer, so does his mother.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Inspiration Behind Presents for Raymond - Decorating the Tree</image:title>
<image:caption>A keen woman who’s very particular about her decorations notices something that shouldn’t be there. An original story, ‘Decorating the Tree’ was inspired by the ritualistic way in which people go about putting up their Christmas decorations. For some people, it’s almost like a military operation. This has to go here, that has to go there, the decorations need to all be up by this particular day, no exceptions … you get the drift. I decided it would be best to feature a family and have only one member of that family be obsessed with decorations. The mother, Georgia, takes her Christmas decorations very seriously, whereas her husband and son have a much more relaxed attitude towards them. Of course, there had to be a horror element somewhere in the story. At first, I thought about Georgia becoming violent towards her husband and son because they were disrespecting the decorations. The idea was that the two would let Georgia decorate the house as usual, not getting in the way – this was what Georgia preferred. However, there would then be a series of incidents that would make the lover of decorations more and more frustrated. An incident where her son knocked over a Christmas tree would have been the tipping point. Georgia would have flipped and gone on a rampage, causing serious harm to her loved ones. I liked this idea, but I wanted Georgia’s obsession to be challenged in a different way. Soon enough, I came up with the idea of Georgia putting someone else’s decorations up; not long after she and her family moved into a new home, she found the previous owner’s decorations. Then I thought, what if there’s a ghost who’s just as determined and stubborn as Georgia? It would be interesting to put Georgia against a supernatural figure that’s similar to her in personality, but superior to her in terms of ability and power. Of course, poor Georgia doesn’t back down and meets a sticky end. I love the final scene where she’s blasted through the tree and ends up quite literally decorating the tree in the garden by being forcibly impaled on it, sprawled out to resemble a sick, bloodied star shape. Initially, the ghost was just going to snap and kill her in the living room. I wanted her death to be more interesting, so I got to thinking about how I could relate it to her obsession with Christmas decorations. When I had the idea of Georgia being impaled on the tree and ‘decorating’ it, that was it. I thought it was a fitting way to end the story. When writing it, the title was ‘Christmas Decorations’. After deciding on the ending, I realised I had to change the title. It couldn’t be anything other than ‘Decorating the Tree’ because it’s what Georgia’s obsessed with doing and it’s what she herself ends up doing at the end.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Inspiration Behind Presents for Raymond - Lights for Company</image:title>
<image:caption>A cheating wife ends up paying a steep price for her infidelity. ‘Lights for Company’, another original story, was inspired by something random I saw while on an evening walk close to Christmas, funnily enough. I saw a giddy couple walk up to their home. The man was in front and he jokingly shut the door on his girlfriend/wife. Taking it in good spirits, she laughed and knocked at the door, asking to be let in. A few seconds later, the joyful couple was reunited. Strange, I know, but that’s what happened. A boyfriend/husband pretending to lock his dear, sweet lover out for a very brief amount of time. This gave me an idea. I would write a story about someone being locked out on Christmas Day or sometime during the run-up to it. Of course, it couldn’t just be a fleeting occurrence like what had happened in real life. It had to be a proper ordeal and for this to be so, multiple things had to happen: Whoever gets locked out has to be prevented from getting back in for a decent amount of time; The weather has to be unfavourable to make the predicament worse; The house has to be in quite a remote location with no neighbours within walking distance. I soon decided it would be a man locking a woman out. After settling on them being a couple (an obvious decision), I thought about what could drive the man to do such an act. Then it came to me: they would be a seemingly perfect couple but the woman has actually been having multiple affairs. With this story, I wanted it to be all about someone being locked out of their home in freezing cold weather with no apparent way of getting help. It’s also about the abuse the locked-out character faces. The lights that the victim sees remind her of the good things about Christmas and are a stark contrast to her current predicament.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Inspiration Behind Presents for Raymond - Meeting Santa Claus</image:title>
<image:caption>An alcoholic Santa struggles to stay in character on Christmas Eve. I couldn’t write a collection of Christmas-themed horror stories and not have one featuring the big guy himself. For ‘Meeting Santa Claus’, I wanted to do two things: portray Santa in a negative way; show the reader some behind-the-scenes stuff, if you will. By this, I mean letting the reader see Santa do more than just appear in a house and deliver presents. While Santa is of course a made-up figure, if I had a single Santa delivering the presents, he would be far too busy to have meaningful encounters with anyone. Therefore, I decided to have the Santa in the story be one of countless Saint Nicks traversing the skies and gifting kids with much-wanted toys and whatnot. I was initially stuck on how to represent Santa Claus negatively. While brainstorming ideas, I thought about how much kids (who still believe in him) love him and hope to meet him. Then I decided it would be good to have a kid meet Santa, but for one reason or another the Santa isn’t the jolly, kindly figure the kid was expecting to meet. Instead, Santa is a horrid, ungrateful and nasty man. I’d written about the effects of alcohol previously in my poetry collection Wine Not? and thought it would be interesting to make the Santa in my story a problem drinker of sorts. At the start, he’s keen to take on the job and deliver presents to kids, but eventually his problem gets the better of him and he screws things up royally. The story is ultimately about the horrors of excessive alcohol consumption and how this can negatively affect the young.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Inspiration Behind Presents for Raymond - Presents for Raymond</image:title>
<image:caption>A family puts out a present for the unborn Raymond every year, but one year strange things start happening. As mentioned earlier, this is the second story in Presents for Raymond that’s inspired by a Terror in Brief story. You’ll find it below: Every year the family chose a Christmas present for Raymond, who had tragically passed away a few months after being born. One year they went downstairs to find Raymond’s present had been opened, with the toy inside nowhere to be found. - #118, Terror in Brief When I decided to write a story based on ‘Raymond’s Toy’, I knew it had to take place over multiple Christmases so that numerous creepy incidents could be showcased. Before writing, I came up with the idea that there’s a routine to the family’s Christmas Day and that a disruption to this routine is what triggers the weird incidents. Usually the family open Raymond’s present last, but one year it’s decided the present will be opened first so the family can get the upsetting part of the day out of the way first. Raymond doesn’t like this. I wanted the story to focus on a few incidents at Christmas, but at first I wasn’t sure where the story was going to go. The incidents that the family experience are unsettling, but nothing dangerous or life-threatening. I then realised that the final incident had to be something considerably more serious and deadlier than all the others. When writing, I didn’t portray Raymond as a malevolent force. I wrote his spirit as if it were the age Raymond would have been had he been born. In other words, his spirit is just a kid who gets a present on Christmas Day. For the ending of the story to be hard-hitting, I decided that whatever happened during that final incident had to be innocent from Raymond’s perspective. He doesn’t mean to do what he does; it’s because of his present that he does it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Inspiration Behind Presents for Raymond - Snowmen</image:title>
<image:caption>A loner with a passion for building snowmen wants to make one that will last forever. This is the third and final story in Presents for Raymond to be inspired by a Terror in Brief story. Here it is: Bradley made the perfect snowman. No one would guess he’d paralysed a grown man and encased his permanently still body in hard-packed snow. - #54, Terror in Brief: Volume III I’d previously written some two-sentence horror stories featuring snowmen in Terror in Brief: Volume II: #134, ‘The Puddle’s Message’ and #139, ‘A Chilly Reception’. The former is about a snowman melting and vowing revenge for being allowed to melt; the latter is about another snowman vowing revenge, this time for being hit by a football. For Terror in Brief: Volume III, I wanted a story that featured a snowman but wasn’t about revenge. I got to thinking about snowmen and what made them scary. An idea soon came to me: why not take the word ‘snowman’ literally? Making snowmen is a popular activity when snow has fallen. For my two-sentence horror story, I had the first sentence make it seem like someone was making a man out of snow. Then, I revealed that it wasn’t the type of snowman we’re familiar with; it looked like a snowman, but there was a man inside, so it was a literal ‘snow-man’. This two-sentence horror story stood out as one that I could expand. There was a lot to work with here. I spent some time deciding who would be so unhinged as to want to encase someone in snow; I also had to come up with a reasonable abduction scenario. To tug on the reader’s heartstrings, I made the victim a goody-good family man who’s on a Christmas break with his loved ones. Everything’s going well until some weird snowmen are spotted. It’s a bit unsettling that the snowmen appear right beside the family’s lodge, but there are far worse things that could have happened. I was tempted to make the story pretty much all about the family and show the series of events from their perspective. In the end, I decided to dedicate some writing to the deluded and twisted character who turns the father into a snow-man. I wanted to flesh him out and make the reader understand the reason behind his actions.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Halloween 2024: Two-Sentence Horror Stories to Read - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Have you ever heard of two-sentence horror stories? They’re pretty self-explanatory: they’re incredibly short stories that are made up of just two sentences and have some sort of horror element to them. I’ve written 1,200 of them and have self-published them into six Terror in Brief e-books. In this post, I’ll share some of my two-sentence horror stories that are themed to Halloween in one way or another. They feature living pumpkins, trick-or-treaters who have tragic experiences, morbid costumes and a macabre trick or two! If you’re keen to read some very short stories that are over in a flash but still pack a punch, check out these Halloween-themed horror stories that have just two sentences.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What’s So Good About Two-Sentence Horror Stories? - They’re Quick to Read</image:title>
<image:caption>To get the most obvious point out of the way first, two-sentence horror stories are very quick to read. In fact, it can take less than a second to read some of them. These incredibly short tales of terror are over in a flash. If you want to read horror stories but haven’t got the time, patience or concentration for longer pieces of writing (i.e. short stories and novels), two-sentence ones might be what you’re looking for. There’s no major time commitment needed to read these stories. Even if you download a Terror in Brief e-book - each one contains 200 two-sentence horror stories - you can dip in as you please. Read dozens in one go or even just read a handful of them at a time. It’s entirely up to you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What’s So Good About Two-Sentence Horror Stories? - They Pack a Punch (Some of Them Literally Do!)</image:title>
<image:caption>Short stories and full-length novels are able to build up tension and make elements of horror all the more dreadful as a result. When writing horror stories made up of just two sentences, you haven’t got that luxury. You have to make the story as short as possible but as long as necessary. It’s all about getting straight to the point and omitting unnecessary details. Two-sentence horror stories can be seen as summaries of longer, more fleshed-out stories; this is certainly something I agree with. Even though they lack detail and are about as succinct as can be, they can still be effective at telling some pretty horrific stories. The thing is, you have to let these stories have an impact. For them to be effective and hit you hard, you have to read the story carefully, visualise what’s going on and, if you can, put yourself in the shoes of whoever’s suffering. Imagine the scenario you’re reading and think about its consequences and implications. A two-sentence horror story might not pack a punch when you read it, but if you focus and allow your mind to realise the full horror of the story, you’ll realise that it might be more terrifying than you initially thought.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What’s So Good About Two-Sentence Horror Stories? - They Invite You to Think</image:title>
<image:caption>In my blog post How to Read Two-Sentence Horror Stories, I talk about a way to read these stories in a way that makes them have more of an impact. This involves reading the first sentence, pausing to imagine what might happen next, then reading the second sentence. Yes, these stories by their very nature can be read in an instant. But if you take a little bit of time to think between the first and second sentences, you could end up enjoying the story more. It’s always great to have something that encourages you to use your imagination and let your creativity run riot. Two-sentence horror stories encourage you to do both of these things, though you have to let them. These stories give you very little to go on. With few specifics, there’s more scope for you to come up with all sorts of weird, disturbing, creepy and unsettling scenarios for the fateful second sentence. You never know, reading these very brief horror stories might even inspire you to write some of your own.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What’s So Good About Two-Sentence Horror Stories? - They Let You Experience the Breadth of Horror in Very Little Time</image:title>
<image:caption>In every Terror in Brief e-book, the stories don’t just focus on a particular type of horror or a single trope or sub-genre. Instead, the stories explore the vast, rich world of horror, covering everything from unhinged psychopaths and remorseless murderers to brutal monsters and deadly phenomena. With any Terror in Brief e-book, you get to experience all sorts of horror. The stories may be over in an instant, but together they show how varied the horror genre can be. They showcase many different terrifying situations, scenarios and events, but even so, there’s still so much more to the genre. With two-sentence horror stories, it’s as if you’re getting bite-sized previews of the many different aspects of horror. With longer stories, there might not be as much variety, but there’s still a whole lot of horror.</image:caption>

What inspired this story was ghostwriters, funnily enough. I saw some celebrity autobiography being promoted and wondered how much the famous person had actually written themselves. A lot of the time with this type of book, there’s a ghostwriter producing some, or even all, of the words. At the time, I was working on Terror in Brief: Volume IV. Since I liked the idea of a ghostwriter, I decided to write a story about one for the newest Terror in Brief e-book. One thing I knew right away was that it wouldn’t involve an actual ghost; the writer would be human. Usually, ghostwriters are paid and are happy to do the job. With this being horror, I had to flip that upside down. The ghostwriter in ‘Who’s the Real Author?’ isn’t getting paid and is most certainly not in a pleasant situation! Before you say anything, this is a two-sentence horror story I wrote myself. I haven’t got a ghostwriter locked up somewhere, forcibly churning out stories; and no, there’s no spare room of mine with dangerous tools hanging up. And anyway, I know from experience that kitchen utensils are much more effective at coercing people into doing things for you …. oops, delete that!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Are My Favourite Two-Sentence Horror Stories? - ‘Two Against One’ from Terror in Brief: Volume III</image:title>
<image:caption>I find that most of my two-sentence horror stories focus on one type of threat. ‘Two Against One’ is different from most others in that it brings together two different threats – a vampire and a zombie – and has them target the same victim, who is a little girl. The inspiration for this story came about when I was looking through some stories I’d already written for Terror in Brief: Volume III. I realised that there weren’t any other stories that had multiple threats, so I decided to write one that ticked the unticked box. Choosing the two threats to feature in the story was easy. I decided it would have to be two beings/characters that would attack their victim in a similar way. The vampire bites the neck and drinks blood, while the zombie bites skin pretty much anywhere else on the body and eats it. Naturally, I made the victim a young girl to make the story even more shocking. There was no point in having a strong, burly, muscular man in his physical prime the target of the vampire and zombie. It had to be someone physically inferior, someone inexperienced in life and drenched in innocence.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Are My Favourite Two-Sentence Horror Stories? - ‘It’s Always With Me’ from Terror in Brief: Volume VI</image:title>
<image:caption>What I really like about ‘It’s Always With Me’ is that it takes a common saying and twists it. Instead of the nameless main character simply being scared of anything and everything, they actually fear their own shadow because of what it’s done. This brings up a lot of questions. What is the shadow physically capable of? What has it done? What has the main character been forced to witness? Your shadow is always with you; this is reflected in the story’s title. Whoever the poor owner of this shadow is, they will be forced to watch it commit terrible acts for the rest of their life. There’s no escaping your shadow. I was inspired to write this Terror in Brief: Volume VI story when I heard someone use the phrase ‘scared of their own shadow’. I knew then and there that I had to write a story about it. Like I do with lots of sayings and phrases, I interpreted ‘scared of their own shadow’ literally and developed the story from there.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Are My Favourite Two-Sentence Horror Stories? - ‘A Taste of Love’ from Terror in Brief: Volume II</image:title>
<image:caption>This was my personal favourite for quite a while, but another two-sentence horror story recently pipped it to the post. I’m really happy with ‘A Taste of Love’ for various reasons. First, it’s about as short as you can get at just six words long, with each word a monosyllable and a total of four unique words. What I also like is that the two sentences are almost identical, though the first one is completely innocent and the second one is horrific, to say the least! If you’ve read my blog post on How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories, you’ll know that common sayings are one of my sources of inspiration for writing extremely short tales of terror. When writing Terror in Brief: Volume II, I thought about all sorts of everyday phrases. As soon as I recalled ‘Boy meets girl …’, I knew there was a two-sentence horror story in there somewhere. Realising that ‘meets’ rhymes with ‘eats’, the story pretty much wrote itself!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Are My Favourite Two-Sentence Horror Stories? - ‘Suspicious Deliveries’ from Terror in Brief: Volume V</image:title>
<image:caption>Just beating ‘A Taste of Love’ to the top spot is this rather grisly story from Terror in Brief: Volume V. The more I think about this story, the more I like it. I’ve written quite a few tales involving abduction and people going missing. While writing the fifth Terror in Brief e-book, I decided there should be a story about abduction, but instead of the victim never returning, they should indeed return – in a horrific way, of course. My first idea was for the victim, Gregory, to be dumped in his garden piece by piece. I wanted something simpler and more effective, so I thought of how people at home, i.e. Gregory’s family, would actually receive him. I soon realised that having the victim be returned by post would be a great ending to the story. What I like about ‘Suspicious Deliveries’ is that the first sentence is already quite horrific, and yet the second one amplifies the horror to a much higher degree. Poor Gregory is in the hands of a psychopathic serial killer and doesn’t stand much of a chance of surviving. While this is an awful situation in itself, what makes it worse is the second sentence: the killer chops up Gregory’s body and posts it to his family, so they get to see the result of his murderous action. The next time you receive a mysterious package in the post, you might want to think twice about opening it …</image:caption>

<image:caption>This jolly excerpt is from Rant #9, ‘The Best Part Is Over Too Fast’. I don’t care what anyone says. For me, the best aspect of Christmas is without a doubt the presents. I’m far from materialistic and don’t value objects and possessions above loved ones, but the exchanging of gifts is the highlight of Christmas, most definitely so. Why? Because it’s the only part of the day that’s unique.
What else do you do on Christmas besides open presents? You’re forced to become sociable and interact with many people. You need little encouragement to become a glutton and eat voraciously. You cave in and become a wine-o and consume copious amounts of alcohol. You’re easily persuaded to become a sloth and watch whatever the TV channels are showing.
All these things you can do on any other day of the year. None of them is exclusive to Christmas. Yet the present-giving part of it is. And that’s why it’s the best part of the day for me.
What’s galling is that by the time you’ve opened all your presents and watched your nearest and dearest open theirs, barely any time has passed. You’ve still got the majority of the day to go. For some reason, we automatically get the best part, the one unique aspect, out of the way first, all so we can concentrate on the rest of the day, which is made up of things that aren’t as appealing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ve chosen Rant #11, ‘Half-Hearted Attempts at Dressing up Are Irritating’ for this scarily honest excerpt. If you’re going to dress up for Halloween, at least make an effort. What grinds my gears is when people throw any old clobber on and decide that the incoherent assortment of clothes they’re wearing is going to be their ‘costume’. Thus, they’ll be going as something completely irrelevant and not linked with Halloween at all.
A teenager wears a hoodie and is a ‘yob’. A woman, wearing normal clothing, draws some whiskers on her face and is a ‘cat’. A man puts some fake, pointy teeth in and is a ‘vampire’. You can probably conjure up a few similar examples yourself.
If you’re going to make a minimal amount of effort, why stop there? Why not keep going? Why not take the time to impress people? Surely that’s better than turning up and causing them to question what you’re meant to be and why you didn’t go further?
If you’re not going to try that much, why try at all? Why spend a few minutes – if that – throwing your costume together when you could be doing something else with your time? Why do the very least when you could just do nothing and garner similar reactions?
</image:caption>

<image:caption>This oh-so lovely excerpt is from Rant #10, ‘The Gifts Are Nearly Always Tacky and Throwaway’. Lots of people put care and thought into the gifts they bestow on their significant other. They eschew the temptation to purchase the common-or-garden tat that lines shop shelves every year. You know the stuff I mean: little teddy bears, boxes of chocolates, cheap knick-knacks in the shape of a heart … The Valentine’s Day gifts you come across in shops are usually mindless, impersonal and worthless. There’s clearly demand for them because they resurface annually, but to me they’re inauthentic. Sure, some people like them and others find this stuff comedic – that’s up to them – but I don’t see the point in purchasing tawdry, bland pieces of toot that are devoid of any real significance. Give me a thoughtful gift – it need not be expensive; it could even be something completely free – over a stack of red and pink Valentine’s Day goodies any day. It’s a shame that so many of us resort to buying things that are mass-produced. If you purchase a box of chocolates, for example, how many other people do you think will have bought the exact same gift? Sweep your lover off his or her feet, figuratively speaking, and enjoy a getaway to a foreign city. How many other couples will be in the exact same city at the exact same time?</image:caption>

<image:caption>The delightful excerpt below is from Rant #7, ‘They Become Less Fun As You Grow Older’. Something else about birthdays I don’t like is the fact that the more you have, the less fun they are. For some people, this isn’t the case as they’re able to drum up enough enthusiasm and bring together enough people that there’s no decline in quality when it comes to their birthdays. No matter what, they always seem to get in the mood and make the most of the occasion. They can tolerate being the centre of attention. They welcome the regular stream of reminders making sure they know that they’re another year older. However, these people are a minority. At least, that’s what it seems like to me. Birthdays were fun for a while, but the sheen started to wear off as I lived through my teenage years. Then as I tackled my twenties, the minute amount of sheen that was still there gradually faded away. Now I’m in my thirties and there’s practically nothing left; birthdays have lost their appeal and I don’t see the fun in them as I used to many moons ago. For most of us, birthdays do indeed become less enjoyable as we age. It’s easy to become less enthused about them when you’ve experienced lots of them. Plus, the more of them you have, the more of your life you’ve lived and the more aware of your own mortality you are.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>The first half of ‘A Taste of Love’ serves the role of setting up the situation. A boy and a girl meet. It could be perfectly innocent and there’s nothing at all in these three words to suggest that anything untoward might happen. The second part then introduces the horror element and flips the harmless first sentence on its head. When reading the second part, we learn that the boy is a cannibal and that the girl is his latest meal. The fact that it’s a boy and not a man who’s doing the eating makes the story very disturbing if you ask me. Of all the Terror in Brief stories I’ve written, ‘A Taste of Love’ is one of my favourites. It’s gruesome, packs a punch and tells a devastating story in hardly any words at all.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>The first sentence of ‘Taking Its Time’ gives us a rather dire summary of the main character’s plight. She’s trapped and there’s a hungry zombie blocking her escape. It seems like her predicament is hopeless. If there’s a zombie cornering her, how can she get out? Even though this single sentence is pretty terrifying - it could even be a one-sentence horror story - it’s still fulfilling the role of setting things up. This is because in the second part, we learn something that makes the situation all the more dreadful: the zombie, which is most certainly going to eat the main character, is a very slow eater. The victim’s death is more than likely going to be dragged out. The zombie isn’t going to make a quick meal of her. He’s going to eat parts of her body slowly and steadily. All the while, the main character will be suffering incredible amounts of pain, shock and discomfort.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>For a lot of my stories, I think of classic horror characters and try to build a brief but effective story around them. Of course, there are countless characters in the world of horror, but I prefer using the classics, i.e. older, better-established ones that more people will be familiar with. Those that feature in my e-books are public domain. If I used characters from recent movies, they would more than likely be copyrighted and I could get into trouble for writing about them without permission. To stay safe, I write about Frankenstein’s monster, Dracula and the like. To write ‘Forced Marriage’, I first decided to create a story based on the classic character Frankenstein’s monster. Having read the novel, I know that at one point, the monster wants its creator, Victor Frankenstein, to create a female companion for him. I could tell there was something here, so I started thinking. Then I had an idea. Victor creates the female version, but once she’s alive, she doesn’t like the male monster and is stuck because she was made for marriage. It’s like how animals are bred solely for the purpose of being killed for meat. The female monster is given life purely to become the male monster’s concubine. The animals don’t get to decide how their lives will pan out, neither does the female monster.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>There are loads of stories in my Terror in Brief e-books that are based on fairy tales and nursery rhymes. When looking for sources of inspiration, I decided to read some of these and see if I could create horror stories based on them. Because they’re usually very short, it didn’t take me long at all to read some and come up with some ideas. It also helps that quite a few fairy tales and nursery rhymes already have an element of horror in them. A lot of the older ones from a few centuries ago may seem to be innocent, but they’re believed to have dark and disturbing origins. After deciding to write some two-sentence horror stories based on fairy tales and nursery rhymes, I did some research. I read lots of them and ended up creating a good number of stories, which I’m pleased with. For ‘Up and Down’, I simply thought of ‘Jack and Jill’ and how they go up the hill to fetch some water. The first sentence in my story is the same as the nursery rhyme; I didn’t want to change it so that it still comes across as a nursery rhyme, albeit a horror-themed one. The source of water on the hill is probably a pond or even a well. I realised that if I made it a well, I could have one of the characters fall or be pushed down it. That was all I needed for my story. Lastly, with the well being atop a hill, I could make it a deep one, thus having poor Jill fall quite a long way before hitting the floor.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>Life isn’t easy for any of us. There are all manner of terrible and tragic events that can happen to even the most undeserving of people. Sometimes, people bring about unfortunate things themselves; other times, they happen upon them through no fault of their own. Of course, this subject lends itself perfectly to two-sentence horror stories. When deciding to base some stories on the disastrous situations people can find themselves in, I soon realised that the scope for this particular subject is very wide. There are lots of stories I’ve written that feature unfortunate situations. When writing them, I hone in on particular situations and try to make them as hopeless, traumatic and deadly for the character(s) as possible. For ‘The Martians’, for example, I had been watching an episode of Doctor Who that features the first humans to land on Mars. (This episode is the brilliant ‘Waters of Mars’, released in 2009.) Of course, things go wrong and the people are soon imperilled. I thought it would be good to write a story of my own, where people have landed on Mars for the first time in history, but there’s a horrific twist. I decided to keep it simple. Having written the first sentence, I thought about how I could make the second one very unfortunate but also not too complicated. Then I decided to play on the fact that the astronauts were the first to set foot on Mars - what if they were the first to die there too?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>There are loads of common sayings that already have an element of horror in them or could be interpreted as being horror-themed. I’ve written lots of two-sentence horror stories based on common sayings after hearing them being spoken by other people or seeing them written down somewhere. As well as this, I’ve actively gone about finding some sayings to inspire me. Knowing there are loads of popular phrases and expressions in the English language, I decided to do an online search so I could see many of them in one place. ‘Nearly Full’ is one of many cannibal-themed stories I’ve written. It’s also one of many cannibal tales to be based on a common saying. When researching common sayings, I came across lots to do with body parts that are perfect for horror stories with two very short parts. Lots of sayings, phrases and expressions that we use in everyday speech have literal meanings that we ignore. The phrase, ‘Do you want a hand with that?’, for example, isn’t to be interpreted literally. Instead, it’s a way of asking someone if they need help with something. What I do is I take sayings like this and give them a literal interpretation. This helps me create the horror element that the story will be based on. With ‘Do you want a hand with that?’, it’s easy to make it literal: the hand is an actual, physical hand. What type of person would give a real-life hand to someone else? A cannibal, of course. To ramp up the horror in the second sentence, I decided to have the potential recipient of the hand munching on something bigger: a whole arm.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>As I mentioned earlier, a lot of the time I’ll choose a subject or theme and base the story around it. Here’s how you can do the same. Decide what you’re going to write about - aliens, for example. Think about what makes the subject scary - abducting people. Come up with a scenario - a woman, Macy, getting abducted by aliens while she’s asleep (and therefore helpless) at home. Set the story up in the first sentence - Macy gets abducted by aliens in the dead of night. Conclude it in the second sentence - It turns out her parents arranged it somehow, so they’re not going to help their daughter. Make sure the second half has more horror than the first - The first part is simply about the abduction; the second amplifies the horror by making Macy’s situation hopeless because her parents, who should want to find their daughter, actually want her gone.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>I also mentioned earlier that I sometimes see, hear or do something that inspires me to write a two-sentence horror story. Here’s how you can take something you’ve seen, heard or done and write a story about it. Think about the image or word(s) that inspired you to write - the phrase ‘No people were harmed …’ that you see in TV and film credits, for example. Come up with a horrifying situation based on what you’ve seen, heard or done - extras actually being hurt, but once the production has finished. Use the first sentence to set the story up - The first sentence is a common notice that while the web series was produced, no one was harmed. Wrap everything up in the second sentence - The extras were in fact harmed, but only once their work on the series was done. Inject more horror into the second sentence than the first - The first sentence is an assertion that no extras were harmed and doesn’t include a horror element; the second sentence does include one, namely the revelation that extras were indeed harmed and their ordeal was filmed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Write Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m sure people have been writing two-sentence horror stories for ages. However, they’ve only become popular in mainstream culture in recent years. This is thanks to two things: The Reddit community, R/TwoSentenceHorror, where people post their two-sentence horror stories; The Two Sentence Horror Stories TV show, an anthology series currently available on Netflix; it’s based on some stories from the Reddit thread, believe it or not. From my research, it seems that horror is the main genre which people focus their two-sentence stories on. A few months after Terror in Brief came out, I came across some two-sentence romance stories and decided to write some of my own. The result is Love in Brief, which, like the Terror in Brief e-books, contains 200 stories. I’ve also come across some fantasy and sci-fi stories with just two sentences. There are even some two-sentence sadness stories that are all about dreadful situations and incidents! The TV show lasted three series. It aired from August 2019 to February on The CW in the US. It seems like the popularity of two-sentence horror stories has passed its peak, at least in terms of its pop culture relevance. Having said that, I and other writers will keep on producing more tales of terror with two sentences!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Read Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>People can read around 200-250 words per minute, with some speedier readers hitting 300 or even higher. This reading speed is ideal for novels, but it’s not so good for microfiction. In case you’re not sure what this is, it’s any piece of writing that’s 300 words or less. It’s a sub-genre of flash fiction, which covers anything up to 1,000 words. A lot of microfiction pieces tend to be on the shorter side; think less than 100 words. Two-sentence stories are classed as microfiction because they’re typically well below the 300-word limit. I mention this because with long pieces of writing, e.g. novels and full-length short stories, you can read at your natural speed with a steady flow. You read one sentence and the next and the one after that and so on, all without stopping. If you’re not interrupted by anything, you could read for hours on end if you wanted, reading one continuous story the whole time. When you’ve only got two sentences, the reading technique is a lot different. With novels and even full-length short stories, there are thousands of sentences that form a long-lasting chain. When there are just two, the chain is as short as can be. This means that your reading is going to be constantly interrupted. Every two sentences, you’re going to have a brand new story to think about. Sure, the story is minimal in content due to its short length, but it still requires you to prepare yourself for a whole new tale to come your way. If you’re going to read a series of two-sentence horror stories one after the other - which you should - prepare for a disjointed reading experience. You’re not going to have the flow that comes with reading a long piece of fiction. Instead, you’re constantly going to be thrown into new worlds and situations. This style of reading is different from what most people are used to, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing; in fact, it can be very rewarding.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When you read a novel or short story, the focus is very much on the plot and characterisation; in other words, the bigger picture. Every word, phrase and sentence matters and makes a contribution to the telling of the story. However, you don’t necessarily need to concentrate on them that much. You still need to read everything, of course, but the point is that you don’t need to give every single element a lot of focus. The reason for this is simple: in a novel or even a short story, there are so many elements that you haven’t got the time to focus on each one. With two-sentence stories, it’s different. Because the stories are so incredibly short, you’ve got plenty of time to read them in full and focus on both components, i.e. the two sentences. Plus, when you’re reading a lot of them in succession, you have to concentrate more on each one so you better distinguish it from the one you’ve just read. It’s similar to how you read poetry. You’re meant to read poems at a slower pace than long pieces of fiction. They’re written in such a way that you’re meant to concentrate more on the make-up of each poem. When reading poetry, you should think about each word and the role it has to play; the same goes for reading two-sentence horror stories. When reading a series of horror stories two sentences long, approach each one with the same concentration and enthusiasm that you’d have when starting a novel or short story. Be prepared to fully focus on each individual story, giving it as much attention as you would a longer piece of writing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - How to Read Two-Sentence Horror Stories</image:title>
<image:caption>Finally, you should be prepared to use your imagination when reading horror-themed stories that have two sentences. Because of how short they are, they can’t pack in a lot of details, so you have to come up with them yourself. In a long piece of fiction, a lot of the text is descriptive. It doesn’t necessarily advance the plot, but it’s still important because it provides the reader with the tools they need to visualise the world that the story’s set in, along with its characters and objects, not to mention any occurrences that take place in the imagined world. When writing horror stories made up of two sentences, I try to make them as short as possible and as long as necessary. In other words, there’s no fluff - well, there shouldn’t be any! There are enough words to tell the story with basic details about the key components, and that’s it. I don’t ramble on and offer excessive descriptions simply because I can’t - there’s not enough space in a two-sentence story to do this. To read two-sentence horror stories effectively, you have to supply most, if not all, of the description yourself. This is great because it allows you to inject a whole lot of your creativity into the story. You can take whatever’s introduced in the first sentence and build on it in your own way. You should use your imagination to do two things: add more depth to the story and guess what could happen in the second sentence. After reading the first part, think about where things could be heading and what the final part of it might involve. Some of the stories I’ve written are quite predictable, whereas others aren’t. Even if the first sentence seems to give away what happens in the second, you should still think about what the final part will involve.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When reading the first sentence of ‘Ceasing Communication’, you might be wondering what’s going on. After all, it’s common in horror for there to be a character who wants a Ouija board to be destroyed; in ‘Ceasing Communication’, the opposite is true. You’ve read the first part and are now wondering why someone would want the Ouija board to be kept intact. This is when you let your mind wander. Maybe the person has been communicating with a dead relative and wants to keep doing so. Or maybe they haven’t managed to speak to someone who’s passed, but they want to keep trying. As you read the second half, you’ll see that it’s not another person asking the main character to protect the Ouija board; it appears to be spirits from the other side. The conclusion is written to shock you as it adds a twist to the tale, though it’s also meant to make you think about the implications. After finishing ‘Ceasing Communication’, think about the situation and where it could lead. What do the spirits want to warn people about? Usually, it’s the spirits that are the threat, though in this story, they’re messengers and something else, something we don’t know about, is actually the threat. What could this be?</image:caption>

<image:caption>After you’ve read the first sentence of ‘Presents She Won’t Forget’, you should have a pretty good idea of what’s going to happen next. The elves aren’t too keen on Laura, though they have to make presents for her. Perhaps they could tamper with the child’s gifts in some way … Now that you’re done with the first part of the story, you’re probably going to be thinking of all sorts of things the elves could do to Laura’s presents. There’s a good chance you’ll hit the nail on the head, so to speak, and accurately predict how the elves carry out their sabotage. When you read the second part, you realise just how far the elves are prepared to go; their hatred of poor little Laura must be quite strong! The conclusion lets us know what fate has in store for the girl. She will open up a present from Santa Claus and find some chocolates, blissfully unaware they could seriously harm or even kill her if ingested. Then the story ends. We don’t actually see the effects of the elves’ actions, so there’s no telling whether Laura eats the deadly chocolates or not. It’s up to you to decide the outcome: does she eat them or not? If she does consume the poisoned present, how great will her suffering be? Or maybe someone else ends up eating the chocolates instead. Who knows what will happen?</image:caption>

<image:caption>You’ve paid for a meal at a restaurant and hope that everything’s going to go without a hitch. The waiter brings your soup out, and you discover a fly in it; what makes this situation worse is having some of the soup before making the unfortunate discovery! The first sentence of ‘More Than What’s on the Menu’ sets up this classic situation. Who knows what’s going to happen next? In the pause between the two parts, your mind should be coming up with all manner of possibilities. Maybe there are more flies in the soup that the main character has unknowingly consumed. Maybe there’s something else in the soup. What if it’s not even soup? When reading the final part, you learn that the main character has been drinking wine containing dead baby remains – some restaurant this is! And because the waiter is thinking this and not saying it, the patron has no idea of the horrifying substance that’s been added to their wine. After finishing ‘More Than What’s on the Menu’, you’re left with all sorts of questions. Could there be something unpleasant in the patron’s food as well? Who killed the baby? The fly in the soup could be accidental, but surely the dead baby in the wine isn’t – is the waiter seeking revenge on the patron or playing a sick prank?</image:caption>
