Why I Wrote Not So Spooky

At the time of writing this blog post, my Rants About Special Days series has four instalments: Not So Festive, Not So Loving, Not So Caring and, last but not least, Not So Spooky. Each one contains rants about a different special day. Not So Spooky is all about the one day of the year when spirits rise and the dead come back to life. You guessed it: Halloween.

Not So Festive was the first instalment in the series. When I wrote it, I wasn’t planning on making it a series. When I decided to rant about more special days, I chose Halloween for the next e-book because it’s arguably the second-biggest day of the year after the dreaded Christmas. Like Christmas, Halloween is hyped up and though it isn’t all bad, there are plenty of things about it that I find irksome.

I wrote Not So Spooky simply because I wanted to share my thoughts on Halloween. I wanted to show that this holiday isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and it has negative aspects, just like pretty much everything else in life. No single day, celebration or holiday is perfect, though they’re often lauded as such. With Not So Spooky, I intend to remind readers that Halloween has its faults, but it can still be worthwhile.

Not So Spooky

This e-book is a collection of rants about Halloween. In it, I criticise all sorts of things to do with the occasion from how commercialised it is to how certain costumes can be deemed ‘offensive’ for no sensible reason.

As with the other Rants About Special Days e-books, nearly all the pieces of writing are rants. The last one, however, is somewhat more positive. It’s a brief summary of why I appreciate Halloween and what some of the holiday’s good points are.

Criticising Various Aspects of Halloween

Even though I’ve written quite a few rants about Halloween, I actually like the holiday. Of all the special days that come round every year, it’s Halloween I like the most. It’s because I’m such a big fan of the horror genre and how much creativity it involves. I find Halloween to be much more inventive, stimulating and varied than Christmas, which can be rigid and stuffy.

But having said that, I’m the sort of person who sees imperfections in everything, even in the things I like. When I decided to write Not So Spooky, my plan was to focus on the aspects of Halloween I’m not so keen on, even those I don’t mind and can tolerate to a degree. As you’ll see from reading Not So Spooky, there a quite a few things about the holiday that grind my gears. Even with all of them existing, I still very much prefer Halloween over other special days.

Why Call It Not So Spooky?

Every instalment in my Rants About Special Days is called Not So X, with X being an adjective that’s associated with whatever I’m ranting about. For Not So Spooky, coming up with the adjective was easy. I thought ‘spooky’ was simply the perfect adjective to describe Halloween. I considered others such as ‘scary’, ‘creepy’ and ‘frightening’, but I felt ‘spooky’ was the best fit. That’s about it really!

Will There Be More E-Books in the Series?

Yes, there will be. In my blog post for Not So Caring, I mentioned writing instalments focusing on weddings, funerals and New Year. I will write those three at some point, but I’ve got quite a few other projects I want to work on first. Don’t worry, you’ll get to read my thoughts on more special days in the future …
